The FYXO 'People's Choice'.
Last year I invited Eddy Merckx and he politely declined. He's already made the trip to Australia this year so as much as I'd love to see the Cannibal pound the pave the likely hood is low. Not even an offering of frites and mayo will get him over the line.
However, there is sure to be a string of high profile ex-cyclists, has beens, could have beens, B-list celebrities, and otherwise cool cats that you'd love to roll alongside this year.
To give the 'People's favourite' and anyone wanting to ride an idea of just what Melburn Roobaix is - here is an overview of the event:
Remember when you were 10? Well, when I was 10 on the weekends and school holidays I'd ride to one mates house, knock on the door and ask him to come for a ride. After we'd knocked on enough doors, half a dozen kids would explore the surrounds of South Morang. We jump off small dirt bumps, make berms from the banks of the dam and ride through grass so long it was like a golden corrider. We'd get lost for a bit, see cool stuff, ride what seemed like 100km when it probably wasn't even 10. The terrain was sealed, dirt, rock and grass. We'd finish at the Milk bar, share sunny boys and talk about what a cool ride it was.
Melburn Roobaix is a lot like that. You can ride whatever you want, wear whatever you want and the goal isn't to get to the finish fast, but to explore the city, do the cool parts again and again, and share the experience with current mates and maybe pick up a few en route.
Back to the 'People's Choice'...
I'll formally invite whoever receives the most votes below. I'll spot them a chicken parma and pot at the Hotel Lomond for finishing too.
If we had a hotel sponsor, I'm sure we could fix them up with more than just an exectuive suite and of course like you, the people's choice can thrash a Melbourne Bike Share bike all day - for free.
Here's is a list of suggestions already. Like Eddy, a lot of exengers will be in France around the time so consider this when voting. They don't have to be a cyclist, just someone you'd love to ride alongside, other than your mates.
