With the advent of the world wide web (not just an improved way to view porn ) some bike riders in the fixed scene have risen very quickly to stardom.
Not to say they're not good - cause the likes of TLeM, Watto, and the Macaframa crew are exceptionally good, the MASHers can hold their own - but when those riders were still in their nappies, one lad was paving the way and style for the bikes and tricks that are common place today.
Pretty Boy.
I met PB when I worked in London.
I just remember he was the kid with the white beanie and matching white ekynox's. Other than the white on top he was always dressed in black, unlike myself who had every colour of rainbow on most of the time.
He rode a Veto which was the back in the day for London's couriers. It had goldtec hubs and profile BMX cranks and he danced on it.
In my first alleycat ever, he came in last, laughing, skidding and wearing a huge blonde wig. I came in about 2nd to last.
PB came into my bike shop one day (I worked weekends and the shop shall remain nameless) and I sold him his first set of profile bullhorns. He was the first brakeless rider I knew, and one of VERY few in London back in'02.
Pretty Boy's style was infectious. Especially on the bike. Anyone who has followed him around knows what I'm talking about. Riding with him always brings a smile to my dial. Whipping along on a tiny gear, flicking, switching and hoping through traffic seamlessly.
He was the first guy doing barspins long before they were hip. He'd slam them too as it was only from crashing the Veto that the fork could be forced to spin 360.
PB ventured to this great land down under and did a stint on the road in Sydney. Only his visa forced him back - but he met a lovely lady who followed him home to London.
The same lady that dragged him back to Sydney. We all thank Catt for it.
Catt even owns a pre-fyxomatosis bike I set up which she rode into the ground and has had resprayed and when completed will be the most gold and purple bike there is.
Here's some antics from Newport Velodrome, Wales.
I'd be lying if I said that I haven't stolen a few on his methods and taken them on board.
Like carrying surgical gloves in your repair kit.
Like constantly riding side to side to ward cars from coming too close.
Like his hairstyle.
Or his handsfree phone manouvre.
Here some vintage shots of him at work and play - clickclick the picpic
Pretty Boy made this back in at work in London on a uber-basic digital camera.
Now he makes THESE world class courier bags, as well as lots of great cycling accesories.
SKIN GROWS BACK
He'll say that he's not a bad rider, but I've seen few better with wheels beneath them. Track, road, MTB, BMX or even a unicycle...
Take his custom Bosevski track bike for example.
Forget no brakes, it has almost NO clearance and 1 degree of fork rake.
Only a samurai would play with a sword this sharp.
