Five years ago McDonald was working as a bike courier in the Sydney CBD when his colleagues suggested he give racing a try.
I gave it a go and before long I had a team and started racing professionally.
After winning the Australian title on the weekend, McDonald was offered a spot on the composite UniSA national team to compete in the Tour Down Under against the likes of Lance Armstrong.
He declined the offer, however, and decided to follow the teams original plans of riding in the Tour of Wellington in New Zealand at the end of the month.
It was as much the teams win as it was mine, so I will only ride in the Tour Down Under if my whole team can ride as well, he said.
