Knee Jerk Nations

Some day are diamonds, some days are just not fair.

Take last Thursday for example.

I get a text on my mobile just after 9am from the courier I'm covering for,

'DID U HEAR ABOUT THE CYCLIST KILLED TODAY?'

I call him to say it's not me, and JT tells me it was at Bourke and Swanston.

2 blocks from where I am.

The bike is still there, the bus is still there, and the victim is still under it.

My thoughts are eerily drawn back to all the people I've known killed at work, killed on the road, and escaping death myself.

I can only think of soldiers who encounter possible death so frequently as bike couriers.

While talking to the police, a reporter jams his camera in my face and asks me how I feel about it.

Swanston Street death: council knew of bus dangers

The full extent of the accident is unknmown, but in true Western world style, it takes a life to be lost for action to happen.  Those actions will be taken by Melbourne City Council as of JULY NEXT YEAR to avoid similar accidents.

(slow clap)

While I was away another cyclist was killed on the road, and then there is this just last night.

Cyclist found dead on inner-Melbourne road

If you need another reason to

a: look out for your fellow cyclist
b: Wear a helmet
c: Maintain your bike

then you are a slow learner.

Ride safe.
