Don't forget

There is something special to me about this photo.

Mostly, summoning the courage to ask a complete (and extremely attractive stranger) to have their photo taken.

This was the first, and I knew there was something about it.

Back then, it was the only little red track bike rolling around Melburn.

A time before the fixed wheel renaissance.

Little did I know that the popular bikes of today would begin to resemble the outfits themselves, much like the BMX cult which flourished in the 80's.

Hot. Pink.

Case in point.

If you're prerequisite for your bike starts at the point of aesthetic coordination, here's some tips.

Rim Job

Matching rims only work on brakeless bikes, or bikes with brakes until they roll out the door.

Brakes scratch the sidewall and make a dogs breakfast of them.

You can choose to run front and rear MSW (Machined Side Wall) or non-MSW rear, and MSW front for a front brake only.

But that doesn't perfectly match either....

Same goes for polished rims - as soon as you start braking on them, they aren't as pretty.

I've never owned a bike with anything other than silver, black, champagne, grey or polished rims.  For one, they suit every other bike, which is great when you go through a lot of frames.

If you likeyour bike to resemble a PANTONE swatch, you'll LOVE VELOCITY.

They've released an array of coloured, and patterned rims and wheels of which, these are my favourite.

As nice as thet are, they do test my limits of outrageousness.

So next time you are concocting the perfect wheels to match your new frame - down to nipple and spoke colour, lacing pattern and hub, take in the above and you'll get more love.

We recommend Shifter Bikes to build.

M*A*S*H* the gears?

Let's face it, too much of good thing is still too much.

Massan of MASH fame mixes his transmissions up too.

Tommasini Prestige, first gen 8v and C-record.

Not sure about the thomson double fisting...

Avoid Road Rage.

The only I've found to get cars on side is to ride at the same speed.

It's at this point that the may even befriend you, encourage you, help you.

Sound ridiculous?

Ride at 60kph (legs a blur) and see if I'm wrong.

Next week
