A warning
This was ripped from a bike forum, but I know it's not unique to Melburn - but is relatively new.
As someone who has been robbed at gunpoint, assualted by a local kickboxing champion, nearly stabbed with a kitchen knife (but never when I was on my bike) releasing information about people preying on unsuspecting citizens can only help prevent it.
I always figured you'd be more safe on a bike, and you usally are.
I have heard of a near identical episode occur a month prior in Exhibition gardens.
I know that this became almost common place on the Williamsburg bridge where you truly have nowhere to hide.
[MEL] rider mugged in edinburgh gardens - late friday night
Sorry to have to report this, but people may need to think twice about using the Edinburgh Gardens after dark at the moment.
Around 1-2am fri night (sat am) a friend was crash-tackled off his bike and bashed by a group of five people, while another ten or so looked on.
Z was riding through the park with friend Y. Y stopped to take a leak, and Z rode ahead. Y went to catch up, and noticed a commotion further ahead and went to investigate. Z had been tackled off his bike, was told to hand over phone and wallet, and then bashed for good measure, with kicks to the head and face.
Z now has a cut mouth and a bruised and sore jaw. If he had been walking, and not wearing a helmet, wtf?
What's wrong with some people? The Edinburgh gardens are beautiful after dark and should be able to be enjoyed by everyone.
If anyone has any information about this incident, or knows of any parties that were going on in the gardens that night, can they please contact the Fitzroy police station on or make an anonymous call to crimestoppers on .
NB. I can appreciate it might sound peculiar to some, and the armchair forensics would like to know who said what, who started who etc, but I have no reason to believe there is anything inaccurate in this account.
